Every family deserves a safe, warm home. Illegal gas work puts lives at risk. It's time to take action.
We believe that no one should have to worry about the safety of their heating systems. Yet, every year, thousands of illegal gas installations endanger homes and lives across the UK.
Data from the Gas Safe register (GSR) estimates that there are a quarter of a million
jobs carried out annually on gas appliances in the UK that are done by unqualified
workers.
Officials deem two-thirds of this to be 'unsafe', with 20% requiring urgent
disconnection as it is 'immediately dangerous'.
Our research found that 82% of installers are forced to rectify unsafe installations by
unregistered fitters at least once every quarter.
Almost half of the installers surveyed warn that this faulty work leads to carbon
monoxide poisoning, a threat that claims an average of 50 lives every year in the UK.
We're calling on the government to take urgent action by making it a legal requirement that gas-critical products and parts are sold only to Gas Safe Registered operatives.
